BENNINGTON, Vt. — The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced on Monday its 2015 women's soccer award winners with Southern Vermont College grabbing five all-conference honors and its second straight Rookie of the Year accolade.
SVC freshman Molly Madore (Higganum, Conn.) capped a stellar first collegiate campaign with the NECC Rookie of the Year laurel while also being named to the All-NECC First Team. She was joined on the top squad by junior Lauren Nesshoever (Chittenden, Vt.) and senior Karina Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.). Sophomore goalie Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made her way onto the All-NECC Second Team while freshman Ally McNamee (Freehold, N.J.) picked up an All-Third Team selection.
Madore scored her way into the Southern Vermont record books in her first season as a Mountaineer, racking up 15 goals and six assists for 36 points while putting home three game winners. Her goal total ties the second-best SVC single season mark set by Beth Sampson in 1995 and then duplicated by Rebecca Hopeck in '96. Madore's points are also the second-most registered in a single season for a Southern Vermont player, being helped by her 10-point game against Wheelock College on October 10 that tied the best single contest mark, also set by Sampson in '95. She ranked third in the NECC in goals scored and second in overall points, leading all league freshmen in both categories. Madore was named the NECC Rookie of the Week twice during the year, one of those leading to her also being chosen as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Rookie of the Week. She is the second straight Mountaineer to garner the league's top rookie award after Mascari picked it up last season. "Molly had a great campaign," said fifth-year SVC head coach Michael Zauzig. "Her work ethic and intelligence really stood out. This award it well worth giving to Molly, and she really deserved it. She always found a way to filter through and create our ability to be in good condition to succeed."
Nesshoever is making the All-NECC First Team for the second straight year, being selected this season as a midfielder. She tallied nine goals and three assists for 21 points, two goals being game-winning tallies. The junior had a pair of two-goal games and recorded an overtime score to help SVC win an October Conference game in extra sessions. Her goals total was tied for the eighth-best across the league, and she is now just one shy of cracking the SVC all-time top five list with 20 career scores. "Lauren once again was huge in what we accomplished this year," commented Zauzig. "Her ability to open up some movements for the other players helped make us successful. She allowed others to get space in the midfield and quietly had another very good season while taking pressure off the defense and helping create chances up top."
Meza had a year to remember, collecting a slew of various accolades over the last month of the season. She helped anchor a Mountaineer defense that conceded just 1.28 goals per game for the year, posting a collective eight team shutouts including three in SVC's last six games. She was named the NECC Player of the Week on October 12 before picking up Southern Vermont's first-ever College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District selection. The senior defender then worked her way onto the NECC All-Tournament Team for her performance in the league's playoffs last week. Meza scored three goals on the year from the backfield, all of those being game winners with two coming in 1-0 victories. "I'm stoked for Karina," mentioned Zauzig. "She did a tremendous job this year and was arguably the most consistent defender we've had in the back. She was a big reason why we did very well defensively and helped us be solid on that side. A great communicator, Karina really took charge from day one, and I'm glad she got this recognition this year because she was certainly one of the best defenders in the Conference."
Mascari is collecting her second all-conference nod in as many years after making it onto the All-NECC First Team as a freshman last season. She registered a 1.25 goals against average on the year, a mark that is the third-best for a single season in SVC program history. The keeper charted six clean sheets during the campaign, tying her for second in both a single season and for a career as she now has 11 total shutouts in her two years at Southern Vermont. Her GAA this year ranked third in the NECC while the sophomore's .841 save percentage was also third best among the league's net minders. Mascari was named the NECC Player of the Week twice this season, both coming late in the year as she allowed just three goals in the Mountaineers' final six contests. She has amassed a career GAA of 1.44, the best all-time mark for an SVC goalie who has played in at least 20 games. "Sophomore season is very critical to success, and Melissa obviously got better and better during the year while having a tremendous end of the season," Zauzig said. "Her confidence and ability, and basically just taking charge faster, has really come into its own over the last year. It is well-deserved for Melissa to be back on this list."
McNamee was great in the midfield for Southern Vermont, helping facilitate the offense with a team-leading seven assists on the year; that was also good enough for her to rank tied for sixth in the NECC. She also registered three goals for 13 points, each of those scores coming in league contests. "Ally is especially deserving of this," commented Zauzig. "She's a great technical player, very skilled and very intelligent. She was a big part in what we did as a team, even though I think she flew under the radar for the most part. We are really excited to see what she'll be able to do in the future."
Additionally, senior captain Katelyn Raymond (Bristol, Conn.) was named to the inaugural NECC All-Sportsmanship Team.
