Women's Soccer Blanks Green Mountain 3-0 for Third Straight Win

POULTNEY, Vt. — Southern Vermont College registered a road shutout Wednesday afternoon as the Mountaineers downed Green Mountain College 3-0 in non-conference women's soccer action.

The Mountaineers improve to 6-4 overall on the season with their third consecutive win and remain undefeated (5-0) when playing on their opponent's home field.

Senior Karina Meza (Los Angeles, Calif.) put home SVC's first goal of the day, scoring what proved to be her third game winner of the year in the 27th minute before freshman Molly Madore (Higganum, Conn.) added two insurance tallies in the second half to pad the visitors' lead. Southern Vermont freshman keeper Carissa Bottisti (Amsterdam, N.Y.) picked up her first collegiate clean sheet, making three saves in the victory (2-0).

SVC next lines up at home with Wheelock College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. New England Collegiate Conference match.

The Mountaineers have now won their last three meetings with the Eagles after losing the first five of the all-time series.

GMC appeared to control the pace of play in the opening 20 minutes, keeping possession in the SVC end of the field while getting multiple shots off. Only one of those was on frame, however, as the Mountaineer defense prevented the Eagles from getting any quality looks at net. Momentum shifted to the away squad at the 26:10 mark of the match when Meza recorded an unassisted score, her third of the 2015 campaign. Neither side put an attempt on goal through the remainder of the period as SVC took its slim upper hand into halftime.

The 1-0 Mountaineer lead didn't hold for long after the break, Madore scoring her first of the day and fifth of the year just 3:26 into the second half. Green Mountain pressed to get on the scoreboard, but Bottisti was able to save both of the shots on goal that she faced to preserve the shutout. Madore then added her sixth goal of the season in the 85th minute, tying the team-high while setting the score at the eventual 3-0 final.
