NORTHFIELD, Vt. — A pair of goals scored in a three-minute span during the first half allowed Johnson State College to down the Southern Vermont College women's soccer team 2-0 Saturday afternoon in the second day of the Norwich University Kickoff Classic.
The Badgers (1-1) owned an 8-5 edge in shots on goal over SVC (1-2) while the Mountaineers took five corner kicks to JSC's two.
Southern Vermont is back on the road Wednesday when the Mountaineers visit Morrisville State College for a 6 p.m. start.
JSC tallied its first goal in the 37th minute of the match, and the Badgers added their second just over two and a half minutes later to go up 2-0 heading into the break. Southern Vermont got three shots off in the closing 45 minutes but couldn't chip away at the deficit as Johnson St. took home the victory.
The opening goal by JSC was just the second against SVC sophomore keeper Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) during the pace of play this year, ending a stretch of 190 consecutive minutes that the Southern Vermont keeper and the Mountaineer defense had not given up a live-action score; they had shut-out their opponenets in three straight halves going back to SVC's opener on Tuesday. She finished with six saves on the day in the loss (1-2).
