BENNINGTON, Vt. — The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced on Monday its all-league selections for the 2014 fall sports with the Southern Vermont College women's soccer team seeing four players collect conference honors, one of those receiving multiple accolades.
SVC freshman Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, New York) and sophomore Lauren Nesshoever (Rutland, Vermont) were both named to the All-NECC First Team while senior Michelle Flores (Pico Rivera, California) and sophomore Melodie Orrell (Gloucester, Massachusetts) were selected to the All-NECC Second Team.
"I'm really excited that these players earned the recognition of the NECC coaches," commented SVC head coach Michael Zauzig. "It's a tremendous honor, and all these players should be proud."
Masacari also took the nod as the 2014 NECC Rookie of the Year and 2014 NECC Goalkeeper of the Year. An outstanding freshman season saw her collect two NECC Rookie of the Week honors while also being named the Eastern College Athletic Conference DIII New England Rookie of the Week on October 21. She posted 201 total saves, placing her third for the most in single season program history. Mascari registered five shutouts on the year, also the third most for a single season in team history. She finished the 2014 campaign with a 1.62 goals against average, helping the team get back to the NECC playoffs for the fourth straight year.
Nesshover takes a top team selection after being an offensive weapon for the Mountaineers. She tallied 11 goals this year, just two shy from the top mark in the league. The sophomore added two assists for 24 total points, ranking third in the NECC. She scored four game-winning goals while starting all 19 matches for SVC in her first season as a Mountaineer.
Flores once again makes her way to an All-NECC Second Team selection after doing so last year as a junior. She also started all 19 games for the Mountaineers in 2014, providing a solid backbone for an SVC defense that surrendered just 1.59 goals per game; that is the second consecutive year that the team allowed less than two goals per match. She was stellar in one-on-one situations and aided Mascari in keeping opponents scoreless five times over the year.
Orrell helped to open up the midfield for the Mountaineers in 2014, paving the way for many goal scoring opportunities. She scored five times this year, one goal being a game-winner, while assisting on five others. This is the first time for Orrell to receive an All-NECC honor after making a run for the league's Rookie of the Year laurel last season.
