BOSTON, Mass. — Collecting its third straight New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) victory, Southern Vermont College won 4-0 Monday afternoon at Wheelock College in women's soccer action.
The Mountaineers improve their mark against the league to 3-1 on the season and are now 5-7 overall on the year. WC falls to 2-9-1 overall and 0-4 in NECC play.
SVC freshman Chelsea Zukowski (Beacon, New York) scored her first collegiate goal, a first-half tally that got the Mountaineers on the scoreboard and would then serve as the eventual game-winner.
Zukowski's goal came in the 16th minute and was the only score during the first half. Seven minutes into the second stanza, sophomore Melodie Orrell (Gloucester, Massachusetts) fed classmate Lauren Nesshoever (Rutland, Vermont) who put home her eighth goal of the year to give her team a 2-0 advantage.
Orrell increased the lead with an unassisted goal of her own, her third of the year coming in the 76th minute; she then added her second helper of the day late, finding freshman Victoria Huff (Schuylerville, New York) who also put home her first collegiate goal to wrap up the 4-0 victory.
Mountaineer freshman keeper Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, New York) recorded her second career shutout with 14 saves, improving her season record in net to 5-7. Wheelock sophomore goalie Meghan Lewis (South Berwick, Maine) stopped four SVC shots in the loss (1-3).
The Mountaineers look to keep the momentum going with a 1 p.m. home kickoff against Mitchell College on Saturday, an NECC match that will also serve as SVC's Senior Day. The Wildcats are next in action on Thursday with a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Fischer College.
