NORTHFIELD, Vt. – In day one of the Norwich Cadet Kick-Off Classic, the Southern Vermont College women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Johnson State College in non-conference action at Sabine Field Saturday night, the first game of the 2014 season for both teams.
Neither side was able to get one passed the keeper through the first 45 minutes, bringing the game into halftime with a 0-0 score. Finally with under 25 minutes to play in regulation, the Badgers put in the eventual game-winning goal on an unassisted score by junior Casey Hutchinson (Middlebury, Connecticut).
Mountaineer freshman keeper Melissa Mascari (Saratoga Springs, New York) played superbly in her first collegiate action, turning away 20 JSC shots in the close loss (0-1). Badger senior goalie Amber McCullock (Morrisville, New York) made four saves to start the season 1-0 in the net.
The Mountaineers (0-1) take on Lyndon State College Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the second day of the Classic while Johnson St. (1-0) takes on Norwich to wrap up the tournament at 3 p.m. Norwich defeated Lyndon 2-1 in double overtime earlier in the day to start the tournament.
