BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College women's soccer freshman Melodie Orrell (Gloucester, Mass.) has been named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 6, 2013.
Orrell recorded her first collegiate goal in the 41st minute to make it 1-0 at Newbury College on Saturday in an NECC matchup, the Mountaineers' only game of the week. She then put home her second with less than 30 seconds to play in the half, the eventual game-winner in a contest that SVC would go on to win by a 5-1 margin. She completed the hat-trick in the second half to extend Southern Vermont's lead to 3-1.
"It's great to see Mel get the credit she deserves," commented head coach Michael Zauzig. "She has worked tirelessly this season, and I think it's pretty evident that her dedication to this program is starting to really pay off and show itself."
The rookie and her squad were scheduled to continue NECC play Monday with a home match against Wheelock College, however, that game was postponed due to weather forecasts and is yet to be rescheduled.
