LEICESTER, Mass. – In a Tuesday evening New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's soccer match at Becker College, Southern Vermont College walked off Alumni Field victorious by a 3-1 margin.
Southern Vermont now sits at 4-1 in the NECC (5-5-1 overall) while the Hawks drop to 3-11, 2-4 in the league. SVC's last trip to Becker saw the Mountaineers lose 3-2 in the first round of the 2012 NECC postseason. This marks the first time in program history that SVC has defeated the Hawks.
The match saw 29 minutes of scoreless action to begin before Becker took to the score board first with a goal by senior Christina Boucher (Pawcatuck, Conn.) off a feed from freshman Erika Galdamez (Concord, Calif.) for her second of the year. BC would mistakenly tie the match less than 10 minutes later when senior Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) took a shot from 10 yards out that ricocheted off a Becker defender's head and into the Hawks' net for an own goal at the 37:35 mark. Southern Vermont then took a 2-1 lead in the final two minutes of the half as senior captain Jocelyn Ortega (Pico Rivera, Calif.) put home an unassisted goal, her fifth of the season.
Becker remained in striking distance throughout the second half until the 80th minute when Mountaineer senior Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) added a piece of insurance with an unassisted goal, her fifth of the campaign and the tally that made the eventual 3-1 final.
Southern Vermont sophomore goalkeeper Katie Raymond (Bristol, Conn.) did not record a save while taking the win, and Hawk junior Kaitlyn Rose (North Attleboro, Mass.) stopped nine Mountaineer shots in the loss.
Both teams look to 1 p.m. NECC matches on Saturday as Southern Vermont hosts Elms College and Becker welcomes in Regis College.
