Women's Soccer Improves NECC Record with 5-1 Win at Newbury

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College women's soccer team moved to 2-1 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 win at Newbury College at the Pine Manor College pitch.

Mountaineer freshman Melodie Orrell (Gloucester, Mass.) recorded a hat-trick in the process, her first collegiate goals.

The Nighthawks were able to keep SVC off the board for the first 40 minutes despite the Mountaineers' continuous offensive pressure. Orrell then broke through to the scoreboard as she found herself in the box and put it away to go up 1-0. The rookie then notched the eventual game-winner in the last minute of the first when she collected a loose ball stemming from a corner kick and buried it to give Southern Vermont a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Halftime adjustments by NC were evident in the early going of the second as the offense found itself with ball possession and opportunities at goal. Nighthawk freshman Amanda McKenzie (Bridgeport, Conn.) would get in on the left side of the box and put away a ball from junior Jamie Chernesky (Scotia, N.Y.) to close the deficit to one at the 52:38 mark.

Southern Vermont responded less than two minutes later when senior Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) beat the Newbury defender on the right side and took a shot that went past the keeper but off the post, deflecting right in the direction of an oncoming Orrell who pushed it in to complete the hat-trick. The Mountaineers quickly added a piece of insurance in the 58th minute as junior Michelle Flores (Pico Rivera, Calif.) got on the end of a corner taken by senior Jocelyn Ortega (Chula Vista, Calif.) for her second of the season. Ortega later closed the day out with a great curling shot from 30 yards out that sailed over and in for the 5-1 victory; Forant assited on the goal, her second of the day.

"I was extremely pleased with our effort today," said head coach Michael Zauzig. "We had a gut check with that goal early in the second half, and we responded very well with those two goals in five minutes. Defensively, we were able to stay organized, and I give a lot of credit to [senior captain] Erika Garay for that."

SVC sophomore keeper Katie Raymond (Bristol, Conn.) made two saves in the win while Nighthawk sophomore Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine) recorded 10 on the day.

Southern Vermont (3-5-1 overall) returns to action with a Monday NECC home match against Wheelock College, kickoff at 4 p.m., and Newbury (1-6, 1-2 NECC) turns to its 4 p.m. Monday conference tilt at Becker College.
