Women's Soccer Edges SUNY Cobleskill 1-0 on Road for 1st Win

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – A second half goal by Southern Vermont College women's soccer senior Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) and solid goalkeeping by sophomore net-minder Katie Raymond (Danbury, Conn.) led the Mountaineers to a 1-0 win, their first of the season, at SUNY Cobleskill in non-league action Wednesday afternoon.

The seesaw defensive struggle was scoreless until the game's 72nd minute when Forant connected on a blast from 18 yards out off a deflected pass to secure the victory for the visitors. The tally was her first of the season.

The Fighting Tigers controlled play over the last six minutes of the contest, but Raymond made four saves and broke up two offensive attacks to preserve the lead.

SVC held a 10-7 shot and 7-2 corner kick advantage in the match that only saw one foul committed, that being called on the Mountaineers in the second half.

Raymond's shutout was her second of the season while Cobleskill junior goalie Hayley MacLean (McGraw, N.Y.) turned in a strong effort in the net, making five saves on the day.

Head coach Michael Zauzig commented that, "We need to build off this win and commit to getting better tomorrow."

Southern Vermont (1-5-1) turns back to New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home match against Daniel Webster College during SVC's Homecoming Weekend. The Orange & Black (0-7) will return to action on Saturday when they host North Eastern Athletic Conference rival Penn State Abington with kickoff at 3 p.m.
