CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – An early goal off a corner kick proved to be all the hosting Lesley University women's soccer team would need to defeat Southern Vermont College Saturday afternoon at Buckingham, Browne and Nichols in the opening weekend of New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play; the Lynx took the match 3-0 with the help of two second half goals.
Just three minutes into the game, Lesley senior Casey Decareau (Haverhill, Mass.) flicked a Veronica Halen (San Diego, Calif.) corner kick into the net to quickly give the Lynx the advantage. The goal would be the only tally of the opening half as the two teams played the rest of the 42 minutes scoreless. Southern Vermont's best chance was in the 15th minute when, after a Lesley foul, senior Jocelyn Ortega (Chula Vista, Calif.) launched a free kick that went wide of the goal.
After the break, LU junior midfielder Hannah Landerholm (Edmonds. Wash.) added an insurance mark when she connected on a free kick from 30 yards out, netting her third goal of the season.
Freshman Morgan Zack (Bellevue, Wash.) would conclude the scoring on the afternoon when she knocked in a Lindsey Bos (Valencia, Calif.) corner kick in the 83rd minute to give the Lynx the 3-0 victory. The goal was Zack's second of the year.
Mountaineers goalie Katie Raymond (Bristol, Conn.) made twelve saves for the visitors while Lynx junior Emileigh Llyod (Middletown, Pa.) and senior Victoria Ellis (Laguna Beach, Calif.) split duty between the pipes for Lesley.
Both teams return to action with 4 p.m. Wednesday contests as Southern Vermont (0-5-1, 0-1 NECC) visits SUNY Cobleskill and the Lynx (7-0-1, 1-0 NECC) travel to Middlebury College.
