Women's Soccer Wins Program-Best 11th Game with 5-1 Victory at Wheelock

BOSTON, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College women's soccer team won its program-best 11th game on Saturday, defeating Wheelock College, 5-1, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action.

The victory passes the previous record held by four teams, all of which were coached by Scott McKenzie, the mentor and close friend of current head coach Michael Zauzig.

"Scott has been instrumental in me getting to where I am today as a coach," said Zauzig.  "It's a very gratifying achievement."

The Mountaineers finish the regular season with an 11-4-2 mark, going 5-3-1 in conference play.  Wheelock ends its season at 4-14, 2-7 in the NECC.

SVC senior captain Shawnee Webster (Hoosick, N.Y.) started the scoring with her fourth goal of the season, being assisted by junior Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) in the 9th minute of action.  Just over a minute later, Forant notched her 19th goal of the season as the eventual game-winner.

The Mountaineers continued to press, with junior Erin Student (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scoring two times before the 20-minute mark.   Both goals were assisted by Forant, her third and fourth of the season.  Student now has eight goals in the 2012 campaign.

Sophomore Jessica Hersom (Sanford, Maine) put the Wildcats on the board in the second stanza, scoring an unassisted goal in the 57th minute.  It was her fourth of the season.

The final tally of the game came when Student found freshman Bridget Kelly (Lebanon, Conn.) for her third on the year.

Mountaineer freshman keeper Katie Raymond (Bristol, Conn.) recorded seven saves in her second win of the season (2-0), while Wheelock senior Sarah McCaffrey (East Taunton, Mass.) stopped six SVC shots in the loss (1-8-0).

Fifth-seeded Southern Vermont is slated to take on Becker College in the first round of the NECC tournament on Tuesday; the game will be at Becker, with the time still to be determined.  Zauzig commented that, "It's always great to go into the playoffs on a winning streak.  We are all excited for a chance at redemption against Becker."  SVC lost to the Hawks, 2-0, earlier in the season at SVC.

Lesley University earned the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the seven-team postseason tournament; the Linx are 8-0 in conference play going into Saturday night's match against Daniel Webster.  No. 2 Regis College will host No. 7 Bay Path College and No. 6 Mitchell College will travel to third-seeded Elms College in the other two quarterfinal matches.
