WESTON, Mass. – Southern Vermont College women's soccer inched closer to securing a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) playoff spot with a 1-1 double-overtime tie at Regis College on Saturday.
The Mountaineers move to 3-3-1 in the conference (9-4-2 overall), while the Pride better their NECC record to 4-1-2 (7-2-3 overall). With two games left to play, Southern Vermont is among four teams vying for the final three playoff seeds.
SVC can clinch a birth with at least a tie against Bay Path College on Wednesday. Regis had already wrapped up a postseason position prior to Saturday's match.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening stanza, with the Pride outshooting Southern Vermont by an 11-3 tally.
Although they were also outshot in the second half (16-1), the Mountaineers were able make the most of their lone shot and get on the scoreboard first. Freshman Bridget Kelly (Lebanon, Conn.) found junior Erin Student (Clifton Park, N.Y.) at the top of the box, and Student was able to hit a high lofting shot over Pride freshman keeper Rachel Gagnon (Ashford, Conn.) for the 1-0 advantage. It was Student's sixth notch of the season and Kelly's second assist.
With just over seven minutes to play, Regis tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore Jasmin Vivar (Attleboro, Mass.) collected a rebound off the crossbar and finished the equalizer.
The Pride were able to get seven shots through the two overtime sessions, including a header off the crossbar with one minute to play in the match. Mountaineer freshman keeper Liz Simonowicz (Chester, Mass.) made two saves in each of the extra periods.
Simonowicz finished the day with 16 saves, while Gagnon didn't register any as the only SVC shot on frame resulted in a goal.
Mountaineer head coach Michael Zauzig said of his team, "I'm really happy with our toughness and the heart we displayed though the match. I'm proud of the effort they put in today."
Despite the Pride drastically outshooting SVC on the day (34-5), the Mountaineers were able to keep their defensive shape and force many shots from a distance.
Southern Vermont will try to solidify its spot in the postseason with a 3 p.m. game at home versus Bay Path on Wednesday. The Pride next matchup against Wheelock College on Thursday at 7 p.m.
