NASHUA, N.H. – Junior Erin Student (Clifton Park, N.Y.) registered five points to help lead the Southern Vermont College women's soccer team to a 5-0 win at Daniel Webster College on Tuesday.
With the win, the Mountaineers inch closer to a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) playoff birth, now 3-3 in conference play (9-4-1 overall). The loss drops DWC to 0-5 in the conference, 1-9 overall.
Student put SVC on the board early with a goal in the sixth minute, being assisted by freshman Bridget Kelly (Lebanon, Conn.). Ultimately, that was all the Mountaineers needed for the win, however insurance came soon after with Student assisting junior Jocelyn Ortega (Chula Vista, Calif.) just over a minute later for the 2-0 advantage. It was Student's second assist on the season and Ortega's seventh goal.
SVC continued to keep the pressure on the Eagles, with Kelly scoring her second goal of the season in the 13th minute, unassisted. Freshman Meghan Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) then added her first career tally in the 19th minute to go ahead 5-0; her goal was also unassisted.
The final notch of the day came once again off Student's foot at the 20:25 mark; she now has five on the season.
Mountaineer freshman keeper Liz Simonowicz (Chester, Mass.) made on save in her second shutout win of the season. Senior counterpart Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) also made one save for the Eagles in the loss.
SVC outshot DWC 10-2, with all 10 shots coming in the first half. The Mountaineers also had the 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.
SVC will continue its strive to clinch an NECC postseason position when the Mountaineers travel for a 1 p.m. Saturday match at Regis (Mass.), while the Eagles look to their Friday 4 p.m. game at Elms College.
