BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's soccer team improved to 2-2 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) with a 2-0 win at home on Wednesday over Mitchell College.
Mountaineer junior rookie Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) notched her 14th goal of the season to put SVC ahead, and junior Erin Student (Clifton Park, N.Y.) added the insurance.
SVC is now 8-3-1 overall on the season, while Mitchell falls to 2-6 overall, 2-2 in the NECC.
The Mountaineers applied a majority of the pressure in the first half, creating multiple chances at goal. Finally, Forant was able to get passed the defense and slot a shot into the back of the net, beating Mariner junior goalkeeper Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) just before the end of the half.
SVC continued to work the ball through the Mitchell midfield, creating opportunities for Forant, Shawnee Webster (Hoosick, N.Y.) and the rest of the Mountaineer offense. Student then collected the ball and scored for her third tally of the season in the 69th minute.
Mountaineer freshman keeper Liz Simonowicz (Chester, Mass.) saved two shots en route to her first collegiate shutout victory, and Woodford ended the day with eight saves.
SVC celebrates Senior Day at 1 p.m. this Saturday when it hosts Becker College. Mitchell will host Wheelock College at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
