BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont women's soccer team raced out to an early 4-0 lead within the first thirty minutes of play on Saturday in its 6-1 victory over New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) rival Newbury College.
The Mountaineers (7-3-1 overall, 1-2 NECC) found the back of the net with two goals from Erika Garay (Walnut, Calif.), both assisted by Jocelyn Ortega (Chula Vista, Calif.).
As the first half progressed, the Mountaineers received two additional goals from Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) and Aleena Molosh (Twp of Washington, N.J.) to cruise into the halftime break with a comfortable 4-0 lead.
As the second half got underway, the Nighthawks tried to chip away at the lead with a 65th minute goal by Corrinn Niski (Oxford, Conn.), assisted by Ashleigh Guy (Chepachet, R.I.). Unfortunately, the defense of the Mountaineers would prove to be too much for Newbury as that would be its only goal of the day. Forant and Molosh would each add another in the second half.
SVC junior keeper Catrina Cecchini (Montville, Conn.) stopped five Newbury shots on the day, while counterpart Nicole Garafalo (Winsted, Conn.) finished with six saves. The Mountaineers outshot Newbury, 16-7.
The Mountaineers resume conference play with a 4 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday when they welcome Mitchell College. The Nighthawks next visit Regis (Mass.) for a 6 p.m. NECC showdown on Wednesday evening.
