AURORA, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont women's soccer team kept up its winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime win at Wells College.
SVC freshman Jess Magee (Sound Beach, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal 5:37 into the first overtime period to lift the Mountaineers, who move to 5-1 on the season; the Express fall to 1-5.
Mountaineer junior rookie Kaitlyn Forant (Hardwick, Vt.) continued to lead the conference in goals with her 9th of the season in the 34th minute of the match. Erin Student (Clifton Park, N.Y.) sent a ball into the goal box directly to the foot of Forant. A quick flick of the foot sent the ball just inside the left post and just out of the grasp of Express goalkeeper Ashley Roser (Taberg, N.Y.) for the first goal of the game.
Wells' Karley Raczynski (Fonda, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate goal with only 9:40 remaining in regulation time, tying the game at one goal apiece. A corner kick by freshman Heather Hiltbrand (Fayetteville, N.Y.) was sent into the mix where it deflected off several bodies in the scrum. Raczynski came up with the ball and forced it past Mountaineer goaltender Catrina Cecchini (Montville, Conn.) for the game-tying goal.
The score remained at 1-1 until Magee collected a crossbar-rebound and finished for the win. Magee noted that, "Everyone worked so hard, and it felt good to step up as a freshman and score the game-winning goal."
Cecchini turned aside five of six shots on goal for the Mountaineers, while Roser made seven saves on the afternoon.
The Mountaineers next play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at New England College. Wells' next match comes Thursday as they travel to play the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in a 7 p.m. contest.
