SVC loses Heartbreaker

Morrisville, NY- After a week of indoor practice, the Southern Vermont College Women's Soccer team was able to get outside on the pitch Saturday afternoon. Not for practice though. SVC traveled to Morrisville State to take on the Mustangs in an NCAA non-conference contest. The Mustangs slipped through with a 1-0 victory.

In the first half of the match SVC controlled the majority of play, as they took seven shots to Morrisville's three. The Mountaineers also held a five to two advantage in corner kicks in the first half. However, both teams went to the half scoreless.

The Mountaineers looked to break the tie just before the end of the half when Connor Crawford settled a corner kick to her foot. Crawford then took a rip that went into the back of the net but the goal was nullified on an offsides call.

"Once again we showed a tremendous amount of heart, along with heart we showed ball control and better possession, which led to creating scoring opportunities," said Head Coach Michael Zauzig.

After halftime the Mountaineers and Mustangs continued to battle in a scoreless tie. That was until Mustang outside midfielder Erin Rundle hit a ball from the sideline that found the back post and bounced into the net.

SVC continued to battle, as they outshot their opponent 13-11 throughout the game. Keeper Catrina Cecchini had six saves for the Mountaineers.

"I tell the girls each day we have the choice to get better or worse, and today we definitely made a step forward," said a positive Zauzig, who is in his first year at the helm of SVC.

Southern Vermont will travel to Cobleskill Wednesday afternoon for a 4:00PM kickoff.
