Mountaineers fall in Home Opener

BENNINGTON, Vt.- The Southern Vermont College Women's Soccer team hosted their home opener Sunday afternoon at Everett Field against the visiting Wells College Express. The Express spoiled SVC's home opener with a 4-0 victory. Southern Vermont slips to 1-1 while Wells is now 2-1.

For the first twenty minutes of the game the Express put pressure on the Mountaineers defense, but the SVC defense held. That was until Paige Stone ripped a shot off the post that rebounded back to her, before she played a ball across the box that found Shannon Blanford. Blanford then ripped a shot and found the back of the net. Blanford and Stone led the Express with two goals each.

The Mountaineers best chance came in the 72nd minute when Connor Crawford beat a defender and ripped a shot that sailed just wide. SVC's goalkeeper Catrina Cecchini recorded 10 saves for the Mountaineers. Wells keeper, Rachel Mattraw had two saves in the match.

The Express held a 14-2 advantage in shots on goal and finished with six corners to SVC's one. The meeting was the two programs first ever. Southern Vermont will host Green Mountain College on Wednesday at 3:00PM, and Wells will host Hilbert College at 5:00PM Wednesday afternoon.
