Nighthawks Fly High Over Mountaineers

BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Newbury College women's soccer team defeated Southern Vermont College in a NECC conference match, 6-1, Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Nighthawks improve to 3-2-1 in the conference and 5-7-2 overall while the Mountaineers fall to 0-7 in the NECC and 0-14 overall.

Newbury opened the contest scoring four unanswered goals. Junior Jessica Graus made a long pass to freshman Briana Tomaselli in front of the net for her sixth assist of the season and the game's first goal. A few minutes later, fellow freshman Krista Toney  added to the Nighthawks lead with her third goal of the season in the 20th minute.

They added two more before Southern Vermont got on the scoreboard in the 33rd minute. Junior Joellen Demers  found sophomore Shawnee Webster right of the net for the Mountaineers first points of the contest.

When the second half began, the Nighthawks remained focused. Three minutes into the period, Toney recorded her second goal of the game on junior Rachel Wyszynski's second assist of the afternoon. Teammate, senior Ashley Greene-Allen scored the Nighthawks final goal of the game on a give-and-go from sophomore Jasmine James.

Depsite the loss, Mountaineer freshman goalkeeper Catrina Cecchini had a solid afternoon in goal against the Nighthawks. The Connecticut freshman rejected 13 of 19 shots-on-goal.

Newbury returns to the pitch on Monday October 25th when they host the Wildcats of Wheelock College at 4:00 pm. Southern Vermont will also be in action on Monday when they host non-conference Pine Manor College at 3:30 pm.
