ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Southern Vermont College senior captain Mel Orrell (Gloucester, Mass.) has been named the first New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week for the 2017 season as announced by the league on Monday.

While SVC did not play last week, the Conference laurel is in recognition of all games played this year through March 5, 2017. This is Orrell's third-career NECC Player of the Week honor after she garnered it once during each of the last two seasons.

Orrell had a terrific performance in SVC's first match of 2017 back on February 26—helping the Mountaineers win their season opener for the first time in team history with a 22-1 victory at Dean College. On the opening possession, she cut down the field before depositing a shot into the back of the cage for a lead just 32 seconds into the game.

The senior captain would go on to tie her teammate for a match-high five goals, and she also registered an assist and a game-high seven draw controls in the win. Orrell had three ground balls and a caused turnover while putting nine of her 10 shots on net.

Orrell and the Mountaineers are back in action this Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. non-conference contest at SUNY Purchase.
