CHICOPEE, Mass. — The inaugural Southern Vermont College women's lacrosse season came to a close Tuesday night as the fifth-seeded Mountaineers fell 21-5 at No. 4 Elms College in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) postseason tournament.
SVC finishes its first campaign with a 4-10 overall record.
Mountaineer sophomore Melodie Orrell (Gloucester, Mass.) scored three goals in the effort, adding five draw controls and three ground balls to her line. Junior Emily Freling (Schenevus, N.Y) and sophomore Emily Lesure (Cheshire, Mass.) each notched a goal with Lesure racking up a team-high eight draw controls and three ground balls. Freshman Taylor Brewer (Bennington, Vt.) assisted a goal for Southern Vermont, caused two turnovers and scooped up two ground balls, and junior Jess Magee (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had three ground balls to go with a caused turnover.
The Blazers opened the scoring with a back-to-back goals from senior Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) and junior Jillian Pirog (Ludlow, Mass.) in the first minute of play. Southern Vermont cut the lead in half on a tally from Orrell at the 28:26 mark, but the Blazers began to gain separation from the Mountaineers as Pirog and junior Ashley Cava (Wilbraham, Mass.) traded goals over the next four minutes of play to extend the Elms advantage to 6-1.
Following a strike from Elms senior Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.), Southern Vermont rattled of a pair of goals from Orrell and Freling to make it a 7-3 game with 18:34 left in the first half. The Blazers pulled away with seven unanswered goals to close out the period, featuring a trio of scores from Narey, to put Elms up 14-3 heading into halftime.
The Blazers carried their momentum into the second half, outscoring Southern Vermont 7-2 in the stanza to seal the playoff victory and move onto Thursday's semifinal round.
