BOSTON, Mass. — Southern Vermont College finished its inaugural women's lacrosse regular season Sunday afternoon, falling 18-5 to Wheelock College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play at Winsor School.
The Mountaineers (4-9, 3-4 NECC) head into next week's Conference playoffs as the No. 5 seed, visiting Elms College on Tuesday for a first round playoff matchup.
SVC sophomore Lauren Nesshoever (Rutland, Vt.) netted two goals while grabbing two draw controls and a ground ball, and freshman Taylor Brewer (Bennington, Vt.) added another two goals in the effort. Sophomore Emily Lesure (Cheshire, Mass.) scored a goal while registering four draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Mountaineer goalkeeper Kelsey Carrera (Queensbury, N.Y.) made six saves in the loss (3-4).
Wheelock got on the board first, scoring three times in the opening four minutes for the early lead. Brewer then scored her first of the day, but the Wildcats responded with three unanswered tallies to go up 6-1. Nesshoever and Brewer notched back-to-back scores to cut into the deficit, only to see the hosts close out the half with six straight goals for a comfortable advantage.
Nesshoever scored the first goal of the second period on a feed from junior Jess Magee (Sound Beach, N.Y.), but WC recorded the next four straight to increase its upper hand. Lesure notched her goal at the 13:37 mark of the second before Wheelock ended the game with the last two for the sound victory.
