Women's Lacrosse Falls 20-2 at Norwich in Non-League Tilt

NORTHFIELD, Vt. — The Southern Vermont College women's lacrosse team opened its 2015 non-conference schedule Sunday afternoon, falling 20-2 at Norwich University.

The Cadets improve to 2-2 on the season while SVC slides to 1-2 with the defeat.

Mountaineer sophomore middy Melodie Orrell (Gloucester, Mass.) registered both SVC goals on the day, bringing her season total to 10 in just three games. She also tallied five draw controls, tying the match-high, and scooped up two ground balls in the effort. Southern Vermont freshman keeper Kelsey Carrera (Queensbury, N.Y.) recorded a game-best five ground balls while stopping nine NU shots in the loss (1-2) between the pipes.

Norwich took a quick 1-0 lead with a goal off of a free position shot just 31 seconds into play, but Orrell then tallied an unassisted score 20 seconds later to tie things up. NU tacked up three more in a three-minute stretch, starting a 9-0 Cadet run that put the hosts in charge.

Orrell added her second at the 7:20 mark of the first half on a free position shot, but Norwich scored twice more before halftime to take a 12-2 lead to the break. The Mountaineers were hard-pressed to put the ball in the back of the net through the second half as NU carried on for its second victory of the season.

Up next for the Mountaineers is a non-conference tilt at Mass. College of Liberal Arts on Wednesday, start time slated for 3 p.m.
