CHICOPEE, Mass. – With a playoff spot on the line, the Southern Vermont College women's basketball team came up short Saturday afternoon as the visiting Mountaineers fell 59-46 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action at Elms College's Picknelly Arena.
SVC held a slight advantage after the opening 10 minutes before going into the locker room down 29-24. The Blazers then padded their cushion through the final two stanzas to garner some separation and ultimately end the Mountaineers' season.
Southern Vermont finishes the 2017-18 campaign with an overall record of 4-21 and a 3-13 mark in league play.
Mountaineer junior Maddy Main (Bennington, Vt.) capped a tremendous rookie campaign with her 15th double-double as she posted 12 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds. She tallied 405 points on the year and 296 rebounds to break the program boards record. Her 16.0 points and 11.8 rebounds per game both ranked fourth in the NECC through the regular season.
Leading the way in scoring for SVC on Saturday was sophomore Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) who tied her career-high of 15 points while adding four assists and three rebounds to her line. Classmate Dani Biggers (Broadalbin, N.Y.) registered six points and seven boards while freshman Brenna Hudson (Malone, N.Y.) had another six points and five rebounds.
Elms finished the game with a 34.2 percent (25-73) clip from field goal range while Southern Vermont went 19-63 (30.2 percent) from the floor. Free throws were scarce for both teams as EC went 8-12 (66.7 percent) and the Mountaineers had a 5-7 (71.4 percent) showing from the charity stripe. The Blazers outscored SVC 34-28 from the paint and used their 58-39 upper hand in rebounds to notch 16 second-chance points to SVC's six.
After the hosts went up 7-0 to start the afternoon, Southern Vermont came back with a 14-2 run to go on top; Biggers knocked down two shots from the outside during that stretch while Mallett converted on an and-1 play. Nine unanswered points from the Blazers into the second quarter, however, gave EC a lead it would not relinquish. Hudson dropped in a pair of buckets during the period to help SVC go into the break down by five.
Southern Vermont scored eight-straight points early in the third with Mallett notching six of those to make it a close 35-34 contest. Elms ended the low-scoring stanza on an 8-2 run, however, to bring a seven-point advantage to the final frame. The Blazers were able to keep SVC from picking up momentum in the fourth before using a 7-0 spurt to set the score at 57-42 with 1:53 left to play. Main was able to find the bottom of the bucket on two occasions, but it wasn't enough as EC ran out the clock to secure the victory and keep Southern Vermont winless in 11 all-time showings at Picknelly.
