BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College fell 74-36 to Newbury College Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball action at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
The Nighthawks went on top 41-16 by the end of the first half, and they extended the separation through the final 20 minutes to pick up their fourth-straight win.
The Mountaineers (3-15, 2-7 NECC) face off with Lesley University in their next game—welcoming the Lynx to the SVC campus on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip. NC (11-7, 8-1 NECC) next hosts Dean College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. league tilt.
Southern Vermont junior Maddy Main (Bennington, Vt.) saw her streak of double-doubles end at five in-a-row as she just missed adding to it with team-highs of 13 points and nine rebounds; she also had four steals and two blocks on the day. Freshman Brenna Hudson (Malone, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points and three boards while sophomore Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) had another nine points, four rebounds, and four steals in the effort.
Newbury senior Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.) notched a game-best 24 points while adding seven rebounds and seven steals to her line, and freshman Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) chalked up 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the double-double. Junior Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, Mich.) provided 13 points and another seven boards in the win.
The Nighthawks were dominant on the glass with a 50-25 advantage in rebounds, and they were able to outscore SVC 30-10 in points off turnovers.
NC led for most of the day—going up 14-3 to start the game as the visitors' full-court press proved problematic for Southern Vermont; Sanders had six points in that stretch while Spears and junior Taylor Kelly (North Billerica, Mass.) each had four. Olsen then registered three field goals to help her team notch the first 10 points of the second stanza and eventually bring a 25-point upper hand into the locker room.
The Nighthawks—who finished with a 49.2 percent clip from the floor for the day—continued to shoot efficiently in the second half with a 13-2 run allowing NC to distance itself comfortably. Sanders and Spears had eight and seven points, respectively, in the third quarter before Newbury closed it out in the fourth.
