BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College was topped 75-38 by Elms College Thursday night in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball action at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
The Blazers were up by 14 at the end of the first quarter before going into the break on top 36-19. EC then padded its cushion through the final 20 minutes take the first meeting of the season between the two squads.
The Mountaineers (3-14, 2-6 NECC) are next in action on Saturday for the third of their four-game home stand—hosting Newbury College for a 1 p.m. tip-off. Elms (5-8, 4-3 NECC) is back on the floor at the same time for a league tilt at Becker College.
SVC was led by the fifth-straight double-double from junior Maddy Main (Bennington, Vt.) who tied the game-high of 22 points while pulling down a team-best 10 rebounds; she now has nine double-doubles on the year. Sophomore Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) finished with six points and six boards in the effort.
Elms junior Niah Pantry (New Haven, Conn.) registered 22 points of her own, and she added a game-high 14 rebounds for the double-double. Freshman Regina LeBlanc (Enfield, Conn.) followed with 12 points, seven boards, and five assists while sophomore Molly Moulton (North Adams, Mass.) tallied eight points, six steals, and five rebounds for the visitors.
The Blazers snagged 50 rebounds to SVC's 36 while outscoring the Mountaineers 42-18 in the paint. Outside shooting was limited as the two sides combined for just seven 3-point attempts in the first half—with none of those takes going in—before they finished with a total clip of 4-19 from beyond the arc.
EC ran out to a 16-3 lead off the tip and never looked back. Baskets were traded over the next 10 minutes as a Main jumper made it 30-17 with 4:08 to go in the first half, and the Blazers would then go up by 22 in the third with back-to-back and-1 plays by senior captain Mackenzie LaRochelle (Chicopee, Mass.) and Moulton. Main had six points in both the third and fourth quarters, but it would not be enough to help the Mountaineers overcome their deficit as the Blazers finished off their fourth-straight win.
