BENNINGTON, Vt. – The 2016-17 season came to a close for the Southern Vermont College women's basketball team Monday evening as the squad fell 86-34 to visiting Dean College in non-conference play at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
The Bulldogs went in front 20-9 through the opening 10 minutes, and they continued to pad their lead the rest of the way for the big win.
SVC (1-24) saw two players tie for the team-high in points with senior captain Amber Dow (Panton, Vt.) and sophomore Amber Lesure (Cheshire, Mass.) each scoring eight; Dow added four rebounds and three steals in her final game as a Mountaineer while Lesure notched five boards, three assists and two steals. Freshman Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) provided six points and three assists as sophomore captain Kayla Emmi (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied the team-high of five rebounds in the effort.
Lesure dropped an early three-pointer to give her team a 3-2 edge—only to see Dean come back with a pair of its own while scoring 10-straight points for the upper hand. SVC freshman Kelley Dobbert (Stamford, Vt.) hit a trey from the left edge of the arc, and classmate Sarah Poirier (Ferrisburgh, Vt.) followed with another on SVC's next trip down the floor to cut the Mountaineer deficit to three. Dean closed out the quarter on an 8-0 run, however, as the visitors started to pull away.
The Bulldogs scored the first 11 points of the second stanza to bring a strong lead into the locker room. Dean then continued to gain separation in the third for a big enough advantage for the win. SVC outscored its opponent by three in the fourth quarter as Dow registered five points during her final 10 minutes in the Southern Vermont uniform; she finished her collegiate career ranked third in team history for made three-pointers (93), assists (175), and steals (123).
