Women’s Basketball Concludes Fall Semester with 69-42 Loss at Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team played its final game of the fall semester Sunday afternoon, falling 69-42 at SUNY Cobleskill in non-conference action at Iorio Gymnasium.

The hosting Fighting Tigers pulled away in the second quarter to bring a 42-21 lead into the break, and Cobleskill maintained that separation through the final 20 minutes for the win.

Southern Vermont (1-7) is now off for the winter break, resuming the season and the New England Collegiate Conference schedule on Saturday, January 7 with a 1 p.m. start at Mitchell College.

SVC sophomore captain Kayla Emmi (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a career day for the Mountaineers, picking up the slack nicely in the absence of a few traditional starters; she tallied 10 points and team-bests of nine rebounds and four assists – all of those being career-highs for her.

Freshman Sarah Poirier (Ferrisburg, Vt.) tallied a season and game-best 14 points for Southern Vermont, adding six boards to her line. Classmates Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) and Kelly Dobbert (Stamford, Vt.) had nine and six points, respectively, while chipping in with two rebounds and two assists apiece.

Cobleskill went 30-for-82 (36.6 percent) from field goal range as SVC connected on 31.9 percent (15-47) of its field goals. The Tigers tallied eight three-pointers to the Mountaineers' seven and out-rebounded Southern Vermont by a 61-28 margin.

Cobleskill went up 7-2 off the opening tip, but Emmi helped SVC keep pace by knocking one down from behind the arc. The Fighting Tigers got the next seven to bump their lead to nine, only to see that run get stopped by a trey from Southern Vermont freshman Bree Soucy (Salem, Mass.). The triples continued to fall for the Mountaineers as Poirier dropped one with 2:30 left in the first, and Dobbert got a layup to go before the buzzer to make it a 20-13 upper hand for the hosts.

The Tigers got the first six points of the second stanza, but Emmi dropped in a short two before Poirier capitalized on a Cobleskill turnover as she drained a three-pointer on the ensuing possession. That's when the Fighting Tigers would start to pull away, however, as they notched nine unanswered points before adding a trey with seven ticks left to bring a 42-21 advantage into the locker room.

Poirier ended a 10-0 Cobleskill surge that started the second half with her third downtown basket of the afternoon, and Emmi completed an old-fashioned three-point play late in the frame. Dobbert got in on the long-distance scoring with a three in the onset of the fourth, and Poirier had another triple towards the end of the game for a new career-high in points. It would not be enough to overcome the comfortable Fighting Tigers' cushion, however, as the hosts completed their sixth win of the year.
