Women's Basketball Falls 81-61 at New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. — In its final game of the 2014 semester, the Southern Vermont College women's basketball team fell 81-61 Tuesday night at New England College's Bridges Gym in non-conference action.

The Pilgrims improve to 5-2 on the year while Southern Vermont moves to 4-4 heading into the break.

Mountaineer junior captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Connecticut) scored a game-high 19 points, now being only three away from the 1,000-point career milestone. Classmate Turquoia Johnson (Montgomery Village, Maryland) followed with 14 points, seven rebounds, and a team-best five assists off the bench, and fellow junior Sarah McDonald (Cohoes, New York) added seven points and a team-high nine boards in the effort.

NEC senior captain Taylor Burgess (Randallstown, Maryland) led the Pilgrims with 15 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Senior Kayla Lawlor (Cocoa Beach, Florida) scored eight points and dished out seven helpers while collecting five steals, and sophomore Utshana Durham (Brooklyn, New York) notched 11 points off the New England bench.

The Pilgrims finished with a 41 percent (32-78) clip from the floor while SVC shot at a 38.3 percentage (23-60) for the night. NEC held a slight 46-42 advantage on the boards and outscored the Mountaineers 46-36 from inside the paint.

Southern Vermont is off until January 3 when the Mountaineers host Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts for a 1 p.m. tip-off. The Pilgrims are back in action Thursday with a 5:30 North Atlantic Conference game at Lyndon State College.
