MILTON, Mass. — The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team fell 86-70 Sunday afternoon to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the consolation game of the 2014 Curry College Tip-off Tournament.
The Mountaineers led by 10 late in the first half, going into the break ahead 39-35. MIT came out of the locker room and shot 59.5 percent from the field in the second period, giving the Engineers the edge needed to move to 1-1 on the season. SVC starts the year 0-2 with the loss.
Junior captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Connecticut) had her first big game of the season, dropping a game-high 30 points to go with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Southern Vermont junior Turquoia Johnson (Montgomery Village, Maryland) registered her second double-double in as many games, tallying 10 points and 16 rebounds with 11 boards coming in the first half. Mountaineer junior Sarah McDonald (Cohoes, New York) scored 13 points in the effort.
A pair of Engineers put up double-doubles with junior Sabrina Drammis (Hilton Head, South Carolina) grabbing 10 rebounds to go with her team-high 27 points; classmate Maya Ramachandran (Fremont, California) pulled down an MIT-best 16 boards, scored 24 points, and blocked three shots. Senior Mari Kordell (Ijamsville, Maryland) chipped in with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Overall field goal shooting was even with MIT recording a 44.7 percentage (34-76) to the Mountaineers' 44.4 (28-63). The Engineers topped SVC 48-36 in points from the point while Southern Vermont slighted MIT 43-41 in total rebounds.
The Mountaineers finish off a tough three-day stretch Monday evening when they host Green Mountain College for their 6 p.m. home opener, and MIT now gears up for next weekend's Colby College Tournament starting Saturday with a 5 p.m. tip against the hosting Mules.
