Amber Flagg Named to All-NECC Women's Hoops First Team

BENNINGTON, Vt. – The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced Monday its women’s basketball all-conference selections for the 2013-14 season with Southern Vermont College sophomore captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) being named to the first team.

It marks the first time in the SVC women’s program’s history that a player has garnered an all-conference first team honor.

The sophomore guard, who was named the NECC Rookie of the Year and garnered a second team selection a year ago, once again put up impressive numbers for the Mountaineers. She is ranked in the top three in six conference categories: first in total steals (67), second in steals per game (2.7), second in minutes played (961), third in both assists per game (3.7) and total assists (92), and third in free throw percentage (76.5). Additionally, she is ranked fourth in both points per game (17.1) and total points (427) as well as seventh in three-point percentage (33.8).

“Hearing the news that Amber was chosen as a first team all-conference player is fantastic,” said fifth year head coach Mike Quinn. “I truly feel she deserves this award as she consistently gives 110 percent in practice, as well as games, and is always looking for ways to improve her skill set. This consistency, dedication, and determination have allowed her become a much better player, evidenced by completing her sophomore season in the top four-of-six conference statistical categories. With that said, I think she will be even better next year.”

Flagg’s 92 assists puts her at second-most for a single season and career (149). The 427 points this year were just three shy of her mark from 2012-13, good enough to tie for fourth-most in a season by a Mountaineer. She also sits at second for the most career steals (132) and three-pointers (82) through her first two years at SVC. Additionally, the sophomore captain now holds the program record for the best career free-throw percentage by a player with at least 250 attempts, currently sitting with a 78.3 clip (281-359) to top SVC Hall of Famer Denise Welch who finished her career at 70.2 percent (224-319).

Elms College junior forward Denisha Parks (Fall River, Mass.) was selected as the NECC Player of the Year while Wheelock freshman Michelle Woods (Wilmington, Mass.) picked up the Rookie of the Year honor. Regis College’s Angela Santa Fe was named the NECC Coach of the Year by her peers, and Daniel Webster College garnered the Team Sportsmanship Award.
