BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team struggled to contain Daniel Webster's graduate student and captain Vanessa Bosques (Windham, Conn.) who dropped a game-high 35 points in the Eagles' 65-39 win Saturday afternoon at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.
Mountaineer freshman captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) led the team with 15 points, a game-high four steals and a team-high three assists in the effort.
Bosques helped get DWC going early, scoring the first six Eagle points to go ahead 6-2. Back-to-back layups by Flagg and freshman guard Mariah Anthony (Northfield, Mass.) gave the Mountaineers a momentary 8-6 lead at the 13:39 mark, however, the Eagles responded as the teams swapped the advantage over the next five minutes.
Flagg picked the ball off Bosques and took it down for the easy two with just over six minutes to play in the first as SVC trailed 17-16; unfortunately for the Mountaineers, that would be the last basket they would make in the opening period as Bosques made consecutive layups followed by a 3-pointer to go ahead 24-16. Eagle freshman guard Ashley Giampetruzzi (Manchester, N.H.) turned an SVC turnover into a quick layup, and junior captain Jennifer Fredericks (Beacon Falls, Conn.) closed the half with two converted free throws for the 28-16 advantage going into the half.
The second half saw more of Bosques guiding her team with the captain going on a personal 7-0 run out of the locker room to give Daniel Webster a comfortable lead it would fail to relinquish. Just about every basket the Mountaineers made was mirrored by a DWC bucket as the Eagles shot 41.4 percent in the second stanza for the 65-39 victory. Bosques scored more than half the team's points as no other Eagle reached double-digits.
Following Flagg for the Mountaineers was freshman Javasha White (Schenectady, N.Y.) who finished with eight in her fifth start of the season; she also led all players with 11 rebounds. Freshman Kala MacKenzie (Fair Haven, Vt.) recorded a game-high six blocks to go along with her six rebounds and five points in the low post.
The second-highest scorer on the Eagles' side was senior forward Emily Travis (Somerset, Mass.) who had eight on the afternoon and also helped set up the DWC offense with a game-high five assists. Daniel Webster's inside game outweighed Southern Vermont's with a 38-12 points in the paint advantage.
The Mountaineers (3-14 overall, 3-7 NECC) next look to their Tuesday visit to Becker College for a 7 p.m. tip, and Daniel Webster (7-10 overall, 7-3 NECC) will try to keep it going Tuesday when the Eagles visit Lesley University for an 8 p.m. game.
