Women's Basketball Drops NECC Matchup at Daniel Webster, 74-40

NASHUA, N.H. – A strong second half by Daniel Webster College led to a 74-40 defeat of the Southern Vermont College women's basketball team as both teams returned to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play on Tuesday night on the Eagles' home court.

DWC graduate student Vanessa Bosques (Windham, Conn.) exploded for 29 points to help carry the Eagles in the win.  Daniel Webster's ability to work the ball in order to find quality looks played an important role in its victory as the team totaled 21 assists on the night to the Mountaineers' five.

The Mountaineers were able to go up 13-8 midway through the first half after a Kala MacKenzie (Fair Haven, Vt.) layup, however Daniel Webster fought right back to tie the game 13-13.  SVC took the five-point advantage once again after another MacKenzie layup to make the game 20-15, but the Eagles finished the first half with a 14-3 run to regain the lead going into the locker room.

Bosques came out firing and quickly put the Eagles up 43-24 with three baskets from deep, forcing the Mountaineers to try and push the ball for the remainder of the game.  DWC did not lay off the gas, however, and continued to increase its lead until the final buzzer.

Southern Vermont was led in points by freshman captain Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) who finished with 20 with help from a 3-9 performance from beyond the arc; she also added six rebounds.  MacKenzie led all players with 12 rebounds.

Bosques was followed on the Eagle side by freshman Ashley Giampetruzzi (Manchester, Conn.) who had nine points on the night, and two DWC players scored eight.  Bosques was 8-14 from long range as the team shot 40% at 3-point range.

The Mountaineers (1-9, 1-2 NECC) look to get back in the win column on Thursday when they host an NECC first place Regis College for a 6 p.m. tip.  Daniel Webster (2-8, 2-1 NECC) will go for its third-straight win on Thursday when the Eagles visit Wheelock College for a 5:30 p.m. NECC matchup.
