MILTON, Mass. – The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team lost the season opener at Curry College Friday night, 60-32. Curry used an 11-0 run over the first six minutes of the game to build a lead it would never relinquish.
Colonel junior Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) and sophomore Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) helped to kick off the fast start. Curry (1-0) maintained the lead for the duration of the game as the Mountaineers (0-1) were unable to pull back.
Freshman Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) led the Mountaineers with 14 points. Kala McKenzie (Fair Haven, Vt.) and Sarah McDonald (Cohoes, N.Y.) had seven rebounds apiece.
Curry was led by Beltz with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Assarian chipped in with 11 points. Freshman Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Samantha Corcoran (Hapton, N.H.) pulled down 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
