Becker Defeats Women's Basketball

Leicester, Mass. – Becker College defeated Southern Vermont College 79-60 in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action.

The Hawks pick up their 5th conference win and improve to 7-14 (5-8 NECC) while Southern Vermont drops to 7-15 (5-9 NECC).

The Lady Hawks held a 41-30 lead into the locker room. There was only one lead change and one tie in the first half. Becker took a quick 2-0 lead off the opening tip. SVC tied it at 2 and took a 4-2 lead on a couple of free throws by Joa Claircius. Becker reclaimed the lead 5-4 on a Kristina Desnoyers  3-pointer. The Mountaineers climbed back into the game and cut the lead to 24-21 with just under 7 minutes to play. Becker then took command of the half starting with a Chelsea Joubert jumper from behind the arc, four points by Desnoyers and two hoops by Haley Ooms and Tatiana Mojica to regain an eleven point advantage 37-26. 

The Mountaineers opened up the second half with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 5 at 41-36. Back to back baskets by Mojica and a jumper by Heidi Miller made it 47-40 at the 15:54 mark. Southern Vermont made it 47-44 with a Tish Hall 3 pointer with 12 minutes remaining. Becker put the game out of reach on back-to-back-to-back layups by Desnoyers, Ooms and Joubert making the game 59-48 with 8 minutes to play.

Southern Vermont was led by freshman Kourtney Hewitt  with 21 points and Joa Claircius who had a team high 10 rebounds and added 10 points.

Becker also had two other players in double figures; Haley Ooms added 12 points and 7 rebounds and Joubert finished with 15 points.

SVC returns to play on Tuesday, February 15th at St. Joseph (Conn.). Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
