Women’s Basketball Upset by Bard College in Overtime, 65-64

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – After winning three games in a row, the Women's Basketball team has lost the last two. Tonight the Mountaineers lost in heartbreaking fashion to non-conference foe, Bard College. SVC drops to 5-13 while Bard improves to 3-15.

Bard  led by as much as eight in the second half, but the Mountaineers rallied and took the lead with under a minute to go in the game. The Raptors, Latiqua Williams hit a free throw with 29 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, eventually sending it to overtime.

In the overtime, Williams took over. She scored six of Bard's eight points in the period, including what would prove to be the game-winner with nine seconds remaining.

Bard extended the defense on the Mountaineers ensuing possession with nine seconds left, and  Dayna Carpenter  got a good look from about 12 feet out, but the shot rimmed out at the buzzer and Bard celebrated.

Carpenter led Southern Vermont (5-13 overall) with 14 points. Abby Riedel had a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards. Fellow freshman Kourtney Hewitt added 10 points and nine rebounds for SVC.

The Raptors, Ruth Ashebir  had 11 points, Fleisher had 10, and freshman Maddy Huggins  added seven points and eight rebounds.

SVC returns to action at the Mountaineer Athletic Center on Saturday, February 5th, 2011. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
