BROOKLINE, Ma. - The Newbury College women's basketball team completed the double-header sweep of Southern Vermont, defeating the Mountaineers, 82-51, in game two. Senior, Tish Hall recorderd her 500th career rebound in the loss.
Sophomore forward Jasmine Bishop sparked an 8-0 run to begin the game before Southern Vermont was forced to call a time-out at 17:21. Coming out of the time-out, Newbury went up 10-0 before Mountaineer freshman Kourtney Hewitt knocked down a jumper from junior Rita Hall.
Machado was red-hot from the field, draining a halftime-high score of 13 points while Bishop was a force in the low-post ripping down five rebounds as the Nighthawks to a 40-20 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Mountaineers tried valiantly to chip away at the deficit. Junior guard Joa Claircius netted 17 of her game-high 25 points in the half but the Nighthawk lead proved to be insurmountable for the Mountaineers.
Newbury took advantage of second chance opportunities, outscoring Southern Vermont, 26-5 and led the Mountaineers, 6-2 in fast-break points.
Late in the contest, junior guard Shayla White picked the pocket of Mountaineer freshman Dayna Carpenter and took it down court for the fast-break lay-up, to increase the lead to 32. White led Newbury netting all eight of her points in the second half.
Sophomore center Catherine' O'Connell finished with 16 points while junior guard Kendra Bannister led the Nighthawk bench registering 10 points. The bench outscored the Mountaineers bench, 24-13.
Carpenter added 10 points for SVC.
Newbury improves to 8-10 and 6-4 in the NECC while Southern Vermont falls to 5-12 and 3-7 in the conference.
