BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team slipped by the Wildcats of Wheelock College Saturday with a last second bucket from junior guard Joa Claircius to give the Mountaineers the win 61-60. SVC improved to 3-11 (1-6 NECC), while the Wildcats fell to 3-10 (2-5 NECC).
The Mountaineers got off to a good start staying with the Wildcats in the first half and going to the break only down by two (31-29). Turnovers plagued both teams as SVC committed 29 and WC finished with 27.
Southern Vermont outscored the Wildcats in the 2nd half and tied it up at 56. In the overtime both teams played strong defense as there was only a combined nine points scored in the five minute period.
Claircius led all scorers with 21 points and she also had six steals. Kiara Bates, Rita Hall, Alyssa Davis, and Kourtney Hewitt finished with nine, seven, six, and six points respectively. Hewitt and Tiarra Hall pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds, but the Mountaineers were outrebounded by 10 (58-48).
Sophomore Forward Keneisha Milton led the Wildcats with 20 points and she also pulled down 17 boards for a monster double-double.
SVC is back in action on Tuesday, January 25th, when it hosts NECC opponent Elms College. The tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m.
