BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College Mountaineers fell into foul trouble which gave way to 16 points for the visiting Mitchell College Mariners as SVC fell 70-56 Thursday night in the MAC. Southern Vermont guard Joa Claircius and MC guard Kaylee Cerruto each led all scorers with 24 points each.
The loss drops the Mountaineers to 2-10 overall (0-5 in the NECC), while the Mariners improved to 7-4 overall (4-0 in the NECC).
SVC could only muster up 22 points in the first half as the Mariners took a convincing 14 point lead into the break. The Mountaineers came out strong in the second half and matched Mitchell in scoring with 34 points.
Freshman forward Kourtney Hewitt chipped in 11 points and pulled down eight boards for the Mountaineers.
Senior guard Alix O'Neil and junior forward Bianca Young finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 12 points respectively for MC.
Southern Vermont shot better from the field and three-land and out-rebounded the Mariners. But in the end 25 SVC turnovers and Mitchell's 84.2% (16-19) from the free throw line took away hopes of its first NECC win in 2011.
Southern Vermont is back in action this Saturday, January 15th, when it travels to Lesley University for an NECC contest. The tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
