BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team fell in New England Collegiate Conference action Saturday night against the visiting Daniel Webster College Eagles 95-77 in the Mountaineer Athletic Center. The Mountaineers were led by junior Joa Claircius who tallied 28 points and only committed one turnover, while the Eagles where led by junior Alycia Gervais who also had 28 points but also pulled down 15 boards for a double-double.
SVC fell to 2-8 overall (0-3 in the NECC), while DWC improved to 8-2 overall (1-0 in the NECC) with the win.
The Eagles were winning 41-38 at the break as it only shot 34% from the field compared to SVC's 44.8%. Daniel Webster went to work in the second half as it shot over 50% from the field, triple range, and the charity stripe to put away the Mountaineers with a 54 point second half.
Freshman forward Kourtney Hewitt had a double-double for SVC with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Rounding out the box for SVC was freshman guard Danya Carpenter and junior guard Alyssa Davis who chipped in 13 and 10 points respectively.
The Eagles also had solid shooting from junior guard Vanessa Bosques who finished with 18 points, including four triples.
Juniors Kirsten Murphy, Sarah Paternostro, and Kacie Lang rounded out the offensive surge for DWC with 14, 12, and 11 points correspondingly. Paternostro also pulled down 10 rebounds to be the third double-double of the game.
The Mountaineers and Eagles are not letting a week go by when they face off January 11th at Daniel Webster for a 7:00 p.m. NECC contest.
