BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Freshman forward Kourtney Hewitt hit a layup with two seconds to go in regulation to give the Southern Vermont College women's basketball a 66-65 edge over the Yeshiva University Maccabees on Saturday night at Medgar Evers Tourney. Hewitt finished with 13 points, seven rebounds.
The Mountaineers (2-2) were down 34-23 at the half. SVC bounced back in the second with 16 points from junior guard Joa Claircius and a total of 43 points to bring it within one point with less than a minute to go.
Claircius finished with 20 points, five steals, and four rebounds. Junior guard Rita Hall had ten points and six assists, while freshman forward Abby Riedel grabbed 10 rebounds and tallied nine points.
The Mountaineers shot 39.7% from the field to the Mac's (0-7) 48.1%. Southern Vermont won on the boards with a 46-42 spread. Yeshiva tallied 24 turnovers, while the Mountaineers only committed 14.
Shir Fuchs had a game-high 26 points for the Mac's and guard Avigail Varnai had 10 assists, eight rebounds, and seven points.
With the win the Mountaineers advance to the Tourney Championship against Medgar Evers on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
