CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team battled the Wheelock College Wildcats on the road falling short after a cold first half in a 65-42 loss Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers were led on offense by Sophomores Alyssa Davis and Kristen Cummings, who both reached double digits for Head Coach Mike Quinn with ten points each.
The win improves Wheelock's record to 2-9 overall and 1-1 in the New England Collegiate Conference, while Southern Vermont College falls to 1-11 on the season and 0-5 in NECC play.
Junior Joy Holliday led all scores with 15 points, while freshman Keneisha Milton notched a career best 13 boards and 14 points, netting the first double-double of her young career.
Southern Vermont led in the battle of the boards on the afternoon, out-rebounding the Wildcats 49-41 as Freshman Christie Henry and Junior Kiara Bates crashed the hoop for 13 rebounds each.
Senior Wildcat captain Sarah Brown came in to the game needing 27 points to hit 1,000 for her career, and it looked as though the 5'6" guard might make that happen early on, as Brown hit 14 points in the first half including three triples, but she cooled off in the second half to finish with 14.
The Wildcats went into the locker room with a 38-15 lead at half-time, but Southern Vermont turned up the offense in the second half, as both teams finished with 27 points in the second period.
Southern Vermont returns to action Tuesday night when they travel to Mitchell College for a 7:00 p.m. game.
