Mountaineer’s Can’t Tame Bear’s

Box Score

BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team lost to the St. Joseph's College (N.Y.) Bears 64-39 Saturday in the Field House. The Bears were led by the freshman guard Teresa Mangan and sophomore guard Ashley McQuillan who each had 15 points in the contest. SVC had no one in double figures for scoring but freshman forward Christie Henry and sophomore forward Tasha Smith each had 11 rebounds.

Southern Vermont came out with the right idea as it was within four points of St. Joseph with three minutes remaining in the 1st half. A few Bears triples, one from Joanna Marciniec (7pts, 7 rbs, 0 turnovers) and Mcquillan (3-7 from three land) in the closing minutes and SJC had good momentum heading into the break.

In the second the Bears broke away from the Mountaineers gaining as much as a 28 point lead; as Southern Vermont could only muster 18 points in the half. Sophomore guard Joa Claircius led SVC with nine points (3-15) while turning the ball over six times, and Captain guard Alyssa Davis chipped in eight points.

Junior forward Ashley Kavanagh led SJC with eights rebounds and contributed six points. The long shot was quite for both teams as the Bear's were 6-21 from three land and SVC went 0-5.

Ultimately the 23 Mountaineer turnovers and shooting 27% from the field held back SVC from a chance at victory as it fell to 1-6 overall, while the Bears improved to 4-3 with the win.

The Mountaineers are back in action Saturday, December 12th, when it hosts NECC foe Mitchell
