Nighthawks Surpass Mountaineers In NECC Action

BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Newbury College womens basketball team won their second consecutive game after defeating Southern Vermont College, 72-55, Thursday evening. Freshman Christie Henry recorded her first double-double for the Mountaineers in the loss with 15 points and 13 rebounds while sophomore Alyssa Davis also netted 15 points for SVC.

Freshman center Catherine O'Connell led the way for the Nighthawks with her sixth double-double of season, tallying 10 points and 15 rebounds. Newbury received solid production from up and down their line-up with five players reaching double figures in the game.

Junior guard Ashley Monteiro helped the Nighthawks take an eight point lead into the half draining 4-of-9 from beyond the arc for 12 of her 15 first half points. The Cambridge native would finish the game with a game-high of 16 points to tie senior guard Katelyn Mark who also had 16 in the victory. Sophomore Morganna Machado rounded out the five Nighthawks in double digits tallying 14 points.

With the win the Nighthawks improve to 2-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall while the Mountaineers fall to 1-10 on the season (0-4 in the NECC).

Junior forward Kiara Bates had a game high 16 rebounds for the Mountaineers as Southern Vermont out-rebounded the Nighthawks 64-48. Tasha Smith chipped in nine points and six rebounds for SVC who looks to tally its first Conference win against the 0-9 Wheelock College Wildcats on the road Saturday, January 16th at 12:00 p.m.
