BENNINGTON, Vt. - The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team committed 23 turnovers in the first half as it lost to NECC foe the Mitchell College Mariners 72-57 Saturday in the Field House. Freshman guard Kaylee Cerruto led MC with 17 points and eight assists, while SVC forward Rachel Pannell had a game high 21 points and nine rebounds.
The Mountaineers fell behind early and were down 38-26 at the half. SVC held the Mariners from scoring in the final three minutes of the game as it chipped away at a 22 point deficit.
Sophomore captain Alyssa Davis had 12 points, eights steals, four rebounds, and three assists as she led the point for Southern Vermont. Forward Tasha Smith pulled down a game high 13 boards, and rounding out the Mountaineers squad forward Christie Henry contributed six points, seven rebounds.
Junior guard Brittany Smyth and sophomore guard Bianca Young contributed 14 points and 11 points respectively for MC. The victory was the first of the year for the Mariners who improved to 1-5 overall, 1-0 NECC, while the Mountaineers fell to 1-7 overall, 0-1 NECC.
The Mountaineers are not be back in action until next year when they face NECC foe Becker College Saturday, January 9th, on the road. It is a doubleheader with the women's teams playing first at 1:00 p.m. and the men at 3:00 p.m.
