BENNINGTON, Vt. -
Elms College sophomore guard Carolyn Talmadge scored a team-high 20
points, and dished out six assists to lead the Blazers to a 74-64
win over Southern Vermont College in Saturday afternoon's New
England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball game. SVC
was led by sophomore captain Alyssa Davis who scored a game-high 25
points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field.
With the win Elms improved to 5-10 on the season, and 4-2 in NECC
conference play, while Southern Vermont dropped to 2-13 on the
season, 1-7 in the NECC.
Trailing 69-62, Southern Vermont's Davis's converted a layup with
1:47 remaining in the game to narrow the Blazers' lead to five at
69-64. That is as close as the Mountaineers would get as two free
throws by Talmadge, a layup by sophomore guard Katie Condon, along
with a jumper by senior guard Jessica Jurkowski sealed the 74-64
win for Elms.
Leading 40-30 at halftime, Elms used back-to-back three-pointers
from Talmadge and senior guard Annie Dunnack to jump out to a 16
point lead less than a minute into the second half. Dunnack
connected on another trey with 17:22 to go in the game to expand
the Blazers' lead to 20 at 52-32, and a jumper by sophomore guard
Christina Korney gave Elms a 21-point cushion with 15:43 to go in
the contest.
Southern Vermont responded with a 12-2 run of their own, capped by
a layup from Kiara Bates to cut the Blazers' lead to 11 (60-49) at
the 10:07 mark.
The Mountaineers strung together a 6-0 run, ignited by a put-back
from Bates at the 7:33 mark that cut Elm's lead to seven at 64-57
with 4:30 to go. Elms then scored five of the next 10 points to set
the score at 69-62 to give the Blazers a seven point edge.
Talmadge scored 11 of her team-high 20 points in the second stanza,
while senior forward Erin Hutchinson and freshman guard Jen
Normandie both scored six points in the opening 20 minutes.
Jurkowski chipped in 12 points and hauled in seven rebounds, while
Hutchison finished with eight points and four boards in the Blazers
win.
Joa Claircius added 14 points, while Christie Henry pulled down 13
boards in the losing effort.
The Mountaineers are back in action Tuesday, January 26th, when it hosts Bard College in non-conference action at 6:00 p.m.
