Huge Second Half Leads Elms Women’s Basketball Past Southern Vermont, 67-44

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Southern Vermont women's basketball team came out strong and was only down 29-28 at the half against Elms College but ran out of steam in the 2nd succumbing to the Blazers 67-44 Tuesday night.

Southern Vermont was led by freshman guard Joa Claircius, who scored 12 points to go with four assists, four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore forward Rachel Pannell also scored 12 points and pulled down five boards and freshman guard/forward Alyssa Davis  added 11 points and three assists.

Junior forward Amanda Brogna registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blazers. Senior forward Paige Schneider filled the score sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots for the Blazers. Freshman guard Carolyn Talmadge added 14 points with seven assists and four boards.

Elms held a slim 29-28 lead at the half and opened the second frame with a 9-2 run to open a 37-30 lead three minutes into the period. The Blazers used an 11-0 run that was capped by a pair of Brogna free throws to open a 15-point lead, 48-33, at the nine-minute mark and then went on a 17-4 run to close the game.

Elms shot 51.6 percent (16-31) from the field in the second half and shot 46 percent (29-63) for the game while holding the Mountaineers to 18.8 percent (6-32) from the floor in the second half and 28.1 percent (18-64) for the game.

Elms improved to 13-10 overall and 11-3 in the NECC, while the Mountaineers fell to 5-18 overall and 3-11 in conference play.

The Mountaineers head to Wheelock College Thursday night for a Conference game tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
