Mountaineers Win In Final Seconds

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Southern Vermont College women's basketball team won a close game against Wheelock College with a Markeisha Mullen three pointer with only seconds remaining to go up 66-64. Joa Claircius had a breakout game with 30 points for the Mountaineers to lead the offensive surge.

The exciting finish was set up when Wheelock's Sharrell Brown nailed a pair of free throws with 21 seconds remaining to give her team a one point advantage. The Mountaineers ran time off the clock before finding Mullen open in the corner for the winning shot. The win gives the two teams a split in the season series, as Southern Vermont avenged a 64-44 loss from January.

The Wildcats were led by the hot hand of junior Sarah Brown who scored a season and game-high 31 points including a 12-15 night from the floor with five triples. Brown also led her team in rebounding, ripping down 12 boards.

Mullen finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Mountaineers who needed a pick-me-up after having some close loses in NECC play this year. They are still vying for a spot on in the NECC Playoffs but have to beat Becker this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. They only lost to Becker at home 74-67 earlier this season so a playoff spot is still within reach for SVC who improved to 6-18 overall and 4-11 in the NECC. The last time that the women's basketball program won at least 6 games in a season was the 2001-2002 season.
