Troy, NY- The Southern Vermont College Mountaineer women's basketball team fell, 50-46, in a heartbreaking game played at Russell Sage College. The game was a non-conference NCAA Division III game and was the regular season finale for the green and white.
Freshman Julia Fagan (New Britain, CT/New Britain) filled up the stat sheet with a game-high 19 points. She added 16 rebounds and four assists. Freshman forward Kristi Kligerman (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Cherry Hill East) contributed 10 points and a game-best 17 rebounds. Senior guard Shamara Wallace (Bronx, NY/Truman) tallied 11 points and made three three-point shots.
"I know I sound like a broken record, but it comes down to playing two halves and then executing at crunch time," said SVC Head Women's hoops coach Benjamin Kozik. "Today we scored 13 in the first half and 33 in the second. But I give the ladies credit - they played their hearts out in the second half especially since they all played the entire game."
With less than 11 seconds remaining and SVC down 48-46, Kozik called a timeout and told Fagan, the team's leading scorer, that the game was in her hands. Triple-teamed down low when play resumed, the official whistled Fagan for an offensive foul on a delayed call and what seemed to be an inadvertent whistle. Two free throws by Sage led to the final score.
"I asked the other ref and she said she didn't see anything. I'm still waiting to look at the film," said Kozik. "Truthfully, there's five seconds left. It's been a back and forth battle the entire day. I just wish the ref had let the kids play. That's what they're there to do. Us versus them. Let's see who's better. Letting a call like that determine the outcome of the game is tough to swallow. However, hopefully that taste will stay in the girls' mouths and give them motivation for next season. And let me tell you, I'm looking forward to it."
SVC (2-21) shot 31% from the floor and 23% from deep. Sage (5-17) shot 29% from the field and 31% from three.
